about

Another take on lyrical themes similar to those dealt with in ‘Mumpsimus.’ That lack of perspective and hysterical reaction that’s deliberately provoked in our discussion spaces for motives of profit, power, influence and control, especially online, obviously. Once again, I think there are pretty transparent messages but it’s all still open to interpretation – in keeping with the subject of the song really. There’s a bit more focus on sophistry, alternate facts and realities and the shifting sands of ‘truth’ here, if that doesn’t sound too outrageously pompous. The music came from syncing a drum machine with my looper and using the tempo from the drum machine to change the speed of guitar loop layers along with what was already quite a strange and awkward beat that became even more so when I slowed it down. It was an experiment that wasn’t actually working very well in that I didn’t really know what to do with what I had, so I did what I always do when I’m in that situation and asked Safetynett to jam on it without telling him much about the time signature or tonal basis. I kind of thought it would probably be ambient because it was loops, it was slow and the beat was relatively sparse so we recorded him playing along with what was there on our Mum’s living room upright piano. I still wasn’t sure what to do with it but I took it away and realised there was something there but what I needed to do was to cut and loop sections of Safetynett’s piano playing so that it fitted better with the repetition and overlapping that was already there. I approached that more intuitively than mathematically and avoided paying too much attention to ‘the grid’ in the software and suddenly it sounded like there was an arrangement with sections and spaces for vocals, synth and lead guitar. What came out was some kind of warped song rather than an ambient piece.

lyrics

You should save your drama
For what will really harm you
Wasting all your energy
Stretching your credulity
Shadows and straw effigies
What will you believe?

Please be still my beating brain
My bleeding heart, my conscience strained
Fracturing reality
Stretching my credulity

Jamie Flett Glasgow

Music maker from Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland, now living in Glasgow.
Since my first collection of skewed, folkish blues songs: ‘Cold But Bright’ I’ve tried to resist the artificial limitations of defining myself as a ‘singer-songwriter’ (admittedly, while writing and singing songs.) This has resulted in attempts to investigate some remoter sonic territories.. As well as more songs. ... more
