about

The idea for this came from a loop of very minimal guitar chord stabs, although I ended up playing that as a part rather than using the loop which allowed for just a little bit of rhythmic variation and subtlety once there were rigid programmed electronic beats and synthesizers involved. There’s a definite tension here between the computerised, artificial elements like the rhythms and the more organic, human elements of instruments and voice. The organic instrumental textures are actually played off the more rigid digital ones for the most part so they have a certain regimented quality whereas the synthesized rhythms and textures were generally inspired by the rhythm of the original guitar loop and some were recorded being played and tweaked as opposed to being programmed in, once again, with the assistance of Safetynett, meaning there’s a sort of feedback loop of conversation (or argument, maybe?) between the musical ingredients, if you can forgive the mangling of more than one metaphor there.

There are lyrical themes of genetics, evolution, technology, time and mortality and the way they’ve informed and shaped our modern world all joining in with the musical argument. I had a bit of fun with some ‘cut-up’ technique which you might notice if you’re trying to discern the words being sung in some places. This was meant to echo the way our genetic code is not arranged according to a convenient logic that we’ve been able to detect, so trying to decipher it is a bit like trying to assemble a jigsaw of letters, syllables, words and phrases that belonged to coherent sentences but have been thoroughly mixed up with few clues as to what their syntax should be. For me, (possibly only for me) and in keeping with the idea of the tension – or conversation - between the organic and artificial there were further, more distant echoes of computer programming language and code and the hint of the evolutions and revolutions that have happened to us and are probably about to happen to us even more.

lyrics

Endless variation of the
Shapes and composition
The random cruelty we find
Charging this reality
Endless variation of the
Shapes and composition
So luminous and free
So limitless and free

We are the data
Rearrangement of the letters
A-ment range re-let
The ofters are we the atad?

Time will change the tones and the
Tones sound through your bones
Bones move through the time and the
Time will set the bones
Time will change the tones and the
Tones sound through your bones.
Tones, tones
Moving your bones

We are the data
Rearrangement of the letters
A-ment range re-let
The ofters are we the atad?

Jamie Flett Glasgow

Music maker from Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland, now living in Glasgow.
Since my first collection of skewed, folkish blues songs: ‘Cold But Bright’ I’ve tried to resist the artificial limitations of defining myself as a ‘singer-songwriter’ (admittedly, while writing and singing songs.) This has resulted in attempts to investigate some remoter sonic territories.. As well as more songs. ... more
